Convicted murderer Bevan Meninga released from jail
Convicted murderer Bevan Meninga

Convicted murderer Bevan Meninga has been granted release nearly 22 years after he was jailed for the murder and rape
of a 19-year-old woman on the Sunshine Coast.
Meninga, the brother of Queensland State of Origin coach Mal Meninga, was given a life sentence for the killing of Cheree Richardson, who he bashed with a tree branch in 1991.
He was 20 at the time of the attack, and was under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Ms Richardson’s body was found in parkland at Alexandra Headland, and it later emerged that Bevan Meninga had carried out the attack while on parole for bashing another woman with a stake in her home.
A Department of Justice spokesman said the 42-year-old was released early on Wednesday morning. He had been housed at a low-security prison farm at Rathdowney, about 100km south of Brisbane.
Ms Richardson’s parents still live on the Sunshine Coast and according to media reports, Bevan Meninga’s parole conditions include that he not live in the area.
Fairfax Media understands he will live with his mother and will undergo regular drug and alcohol tests.
Speaking to media on Wednesday, Premier Campbell Newman said Mr Meninga had "certainly certainly done the crime and he's done the time", and the court had made its independent decision.
"The courts have made a decision and let's hope that with the support of family and friends that he can be rehabilitated properly and back into society," he said.
Bevan Meninga will not live with his brother, Mal, who had earlier offered to house Bevan if his parole was granted.
While Meninga was eligible for parole in 2005, it was only approved in February this year after he went to the Supreme Court.

Mal’s killer brother angry over parole
Bevan Meninga at the time of his incarceration.

The jailed brother of Queensland rugby league legend Mal Meninga, who is starting his 22nd year of a life sentence for killing a teenage girl, claims he has been waiting more than a year for a parole decision.
Bevan Meninga was convicted of the 1991 murder of Sunshine Coast teenager Cheree Richardson in 1992, when he was 20.
He is taking the Queensland Parole Board to the Supreme Court to force it to make a decision on his parole, after he applied in December 2012.
Meninga has been eligible for parole since 2005, the court application says.
His application for a statutory order of review says the Board has “a duty” to make a decision on parole within 180 to 210 days of receiving a prisoner’s application.
The application says Meninga is “aggrieved” by the Board’s non-decision and his interests have been adversely affected.
Meninga is a low security prisoner at Palen Creek Correctional Centre at Rathdowney, an open-campus style prison farm south of Brisbane.
“I am now entering my 22nd year of imprisonment,” Meninga says in his court affidavit.
“At the commencement of my sentence I had certain expectations under the Corrective Services Act.”
Meninga says he has completed all rehabilitation programs and courses and has not been asked to do any more.
“I have been waiting some 13 months for a final decision on my submitted application,” he says.
Bevan Meninga was found guilty of the 1991 murder and rape of Sunshine Coast teenager Cheree Richardson in 1992.
Ms Richardson suffered massive head injuries after being bashed with a tree branch and also had internal injuries.
Bevan Meninga fathered a child behind bars while having an affair with a female prison guard, who resigned in 1997.
In 2000 Meninga lost his case against Corrective Services when he tried to sue for $ 200,000 damages for the stress of witnessing a 1993 jail murder.
During a court case in 2010 Meninga said he fabricated a story to get police to remove him from jail for a visit and seafood meal with his brother Mal at Brisbane police headquarters.
In a 2006 media report Mal Meninga spoke about standing by his youngest brother while he was in jail, for the sake of their mum, and supporting him if he got out on parole.
