Man who raped 85-year-old woman jailed

A MAN who raped and brutally bashed a frail 85-year-old woman at a Melbourne train station "for a bit of a thrill" has been jailed for 11 years.
Allan Richard Hodson, 65, loitered around Southern Cross Station before selecting his victim and attacking her in a public toilet on January 27.
He later told police it was a chance for a "bit of a thrill".
Hodson, of Bairnsdale in Victoria's east, pleaded guilty to rape, recklessly causing serious injury and threatening injury.
In sentencing, Victorian County Court Judge Duncan Allen described the violent rape as shocking and horrific.
"This has had a devastating impact on her in her old age," the judge told Hodson.
On the day of the incident, Hodson had travelled from Bairnsdale to Melbourne for a psychiatric appointment and had drunk four 750ml bottles of beer.
The court previously heard Hodson's mental illness was not directly linked to his behaviour on this day, but would make his imprisonment more onerous.
He was "deeply ashamed" of his offending, but his age and guilty plea should be taken into account favourably, his defence counsel argued.
The prosecution submitted Hodson should be jailed for eight to 10 years, with a non-parole period of six to eight years.

Southern Cross station rapist pleads guilty to attacking 85-year-old

A MAN has pleaded guilty to raping and bashing an 85-year-old woman at a Melbourne train station.
Allan Richard Hodson, 65, bashed and raped the elderly woman after dragging her into a public toilet at Southern Cross train station in a brutal daylight attack on January 27.
He pleaded guilty to charges of rape, recklessly causing serious injury and threatening to inflict serious injury during a brief hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court today.
Hodson, who appeared in court via videolink, was remanded into custody to face a pre-sentence hearing at the County Court on July 29.
The prosecution withdrew further charges including indecent assault, threat to kill and unlawful imprisonment as part of a plea deal.
Hodson's barrister Dermot Dann said his client was dealing with a range of psychiatric issues.
Hodson made no application for bail.

Help find fiend who bashed woman, 85

A depraved sex attacker was spotted at three busy Melbourne landmarks before assaulting an elderly woman.
The victim, aged 85, was dragged into a disabled toilet, bashed and robbed during a 10-minute ordeal at Southern Cross railway station on Thursday.
She remained in hospital last night with a facial fracture and widespread bruising.
Her attacker initially tried to drag her into a nappy change area on the Southern Cross concourse level.
He was earlier spotted at Federation Square and Flinders St railway station.
Det-Sgt Doug Smith, of the sexual crimes squad, said it was vital the man was quickly found.
"He severely assaulted her by bashing her, punching her in the face and head area, and then sexually assaulting her as well," he said.
"This event went on for some 10 minutes or more, and he then left the station, leaving her in a state of undress on the floor in the disabled toilets.
"It happened when there were many, many people in the area."
Det-Sgt Smith said the attacker threatened the woman before leaving her in the toilet and she had been reluctant to come forward.
He said the man looked in her purse and she feared he may know her address.
The man was described as being Caucasian, about 60 and about 185cm tall. He has a solid build with a "round face" and short white hair balding on top.
He was wearing a dark-coloured polo shirt, light-coloured shorts, glasses, white socks and sneakers.

Woman, 85, sexually assaulted at busy train station in Melbourne

AN 85-year-old woman has been bashed and sexually assaulted at one of Melbourne's busiest train stations in broad daylight.
Detective Sergeant Doug Smith, of the sexual crime squad, said a man aged about 60 confronted the woman as she was going to a toilet about 1pm on Thursday at the Southern Cross Railway Station, in central Melbourne.
"She was confronted by a man outside the disabled toilets who then dragged her into the disabled toilet and at this time he severely assaulted her by bashing her, punching her to the face and head area and then he sexually assaulted her," he said.
While the man made an initial demand for cash, he fled the scene empty-handed after 10 minutes, he said.
Police would like to speak to a good Samaritan who came to the aid of the woman and found her lying on the toilet floor, partly undressed.
Det Sgt Smith said the victim remains in hospital "black and blue" with bruises and had a fracture to the face.
"It's a very audacious attack," he said.
"It happened in the middle of the day, it happened when there was many, many people in the area going to and from the toilets."
He said police were confident of making an arrest and they had clear images of the man from CCTV footage.
Police describe him as aged about 60, with white short hair, about 185cm tall. He was wearing a dark polo shirt, light coloured shorts and possibly glasses.
"He's clearly identifiable in those shots," Det Sgt Smith said.
He said the woman remains frightened as the attacker threatened her safety if she reported the incident to police.
"He made some fairly serious threats about what would happen if she reported it to police," he said.
