Abuse Laws Pass Upper House

LEGISLATION requiring priests, church workers and volunteers to notify authorities of suspected child abuse was passed in the Upper House last night, despite opposition from the Government.
The Children's Protection (Mandatory Reporting) Amendment Bill, introduced by No Pokies MLC Nick Xenopnon in 2003, will now go to the Lower House for debate.
The notification requirement was first recommended by the Layton report into child protection, released in March 2003.
Mr Xenophon said the Government's "excuses" that it was still working on a better version of the Bill, and that it was still consulting with churches, "just didn't wash".
"Passing the Bill in the Upper House should hopefully jolt the Government into action," he said.
He was disappointed an amendment was passed that exempts abuse revealed in church confessionals.
