Net Carriers Face Porn Crackdown

THE Federal Government has stepped up its fight against the online abuse of children.
From next week, Internet service providers will face fines up to $55,000 if their services can be used to access child pornography and they do not refer the information to the police.
Federal Minister for Justice and Customs Chris Ellison has written to all major ISPs in Australia advising them of the strict obligations which come into effect from March 1.
Under amendments to the Criminal Code, service providers must report material they believe is child pornography or child abuse to the Australian Federal Police.
"ISPs and Internet Content Hosts should be aware that come March 1, they will be obligated to join the Federal Government's frontline fight against abuse of children online," Senator Ellison said.
An ISP or ICH will now face penalties of $11,000 for the individual, and $55,000 for body corporates, if they are made aware their service can be used to access child pornography or child abuse material, and they do not refer details of that material to the AFP within a reasonable time.
