Pedophile Register Given Boost
The ACT Government will spend $100,000 a year on its new child-sex offender register.
Police Minister John Hargreaves will reveal the funding in tomorrow's Budget.
The register will replace the more informal
relationship of sharing intelligence about
paedophiles between Australia's police forces.
"Under the register anyone convicted of sexual
or other serious offences against children will
be legally obliged to notify police of their address,
places they frequent, car registration and other personal details," Mr Hargreaves said.
"[It] is an important measure for this Government
to guarantee the safety of our children."
The register would eventually form part
of a national database.
The ACT Government had been waiting for
the states and territories to agree on the
national register, but drafted its own legislation in the meantime.
It has already presented this legislation
to the Assembly.
The proposal is being backed by victims of
crime groups, but civil libertarians have
questioned it, saying released offenders still had rights.
