Convicted child-sex offenders living in Canberra will be forced to give personal information to police under a new paedophile register to be established in the ACT. Convicted paedophiles will have to tell police where they live, work and spend their spare time, possibly for the rest of their lives, The Canberra Times reported. Legislation to create the register was passed in the ACT Legislative Assembly on Thursday. Police Minister John Hargreaves said the register would be operational within "a couple of months". It will link into registers already in existence in Victoria and NSW as part of a nascent national register of child-sex offenders. $100,000 was allocated in the 2005-06 budget to establish the register, the paper reported. Under the register, paedophiles will be obliged to tell police their car registration and other personal information and will be banned from working in child-related industries. They will also have to notify police of any plans to travel outside the ACT, so that police forces interstate can be notified of their whereabouts.
