Iemma May Review Child Protection Laws

NSW Premier Morris Iemma says he is willing to consider a review of laws which allow some convicted sex offenders special exemptions to work with children.
Documents from the Commission for Children and Young People show that since 2003, 89 sex offenders have been granted an exemption from their prohibited employment order.
Most cases involved middle-aged men, convicted of carnal knowledge committed decades ago, but some involved younger men.
NSW Commissioner for Children and Young People Gillian Calvert, who signed off 59 approvals, said only those who posed no threat were exempted.
Mr Iemma today said although the commissioner tried to act in the best interests of children, he would seek details of all the exemptions which had been granted.
"If there are grounds for tightening up and providing additional powers for the commissioner then I'm certainly prepared to entertain that," Mr Iemma told reporters in Sydney.
He said most of the people who had been granted exemptions had only been convicted of minor offences.
"It's a balance of whether a minor transgression a long, long time ago excludes, say, a bus driver from gaining employment as a driver," Mr Iemma said.
