Crime Victims Gain Greater Role

NEW Queensland laws will give the victims of serious crime a say on the release of offenders.
Police and Corrective Services Minister Judy Spence said victims of violent and sexual crimes who register with the Concerned Person's Register would be able to make written submissions to a parole board before the perpetrator of the crime was released into the community.
She said the change followed an extensive review of the Corrective Services Act in which it was suggested the measure would benefit victims.
"This will give victims of sexual and violent offences an opportunity to have their say when the perpetrator of the crime becomes eligible for parole," Ms Spence said today.
"Currently there is no statutory requirement for a board to seek input from victims although registered victims are notified when an offender is eligible for parole, and many do make submissions."
The new laws will be introduced to State Parliament next year.
