GPS To Track Offenders 'Doesn't Work'

DEVICES that use satellites to track convicted sex offenders after their release from prison don't work properly, the WA government says.
Corrective Services Minister Margaret Quirk said trials in January and March showed three global positioning system-based electronic devices failed to track offenders in real time.
The devices were only able to report offenders' movements retrospectively, not as they moved through the community.
"There were also a number of anomalies in the models tested so we could not be confident enough in the products to give assurances about their reliability," Ms Quirk said.
"I am not prepared to compromise on reliability when we are talking about community safety."
At present, all convicted sex offenders are placed on a sex offender register.
The Government had not given up on the technology and would continue to monitor advances in GPS technology in Australia and worldwide, she said.
