School threats accused has child porn conviction

It has been revealed a southern Tasmanian man, who has allegedly threatened to blow up a school, has a conviction for possessing child pornography images.
Police claim 41-year-old John Trevor Gowland of Maydena has made general threats to target children, including a threat to kidnap young children.
Police have warned schools and childcare centres of the alleged threats, and Gowland has been remanded in custody after appearing before an out-of-hours court on Friday night.
An interim restraint order has been issued against him, and he will appear before a magistrate on Tuesday, when police will seek a long-term restraint order.
Deputy Police Commissioner Jack Johnston says Gowland has a prior conviction arising from a national crackdown on child pornography.
“The person involved has recently been released from prison having served a period of imprisonment for offences arising out of our recent Operation Auxin,” he said.

Man jailed over 37,000 child porn images

A southern Tasmanian man has been sentenced to 12 months jail for possessing more than 37,000 images of child pornography
John Trevor Gowland, 40, from Maydena was sentenced in the Hobart Magistrates Court.
Last month, Gowland pleaded guilty to one count of possessing a child abuse product.
This crime attracts a maximum fine of $5,000 or 12 months in jail.
When police searched his home they found more than 37,000 electronic images and 50 video clips portraying children in a sexual manner or engaged in sexual acts.
The court heard some of the children were younger than two-years-old.
The prosecutor told the court she believed the maximum penalty available in this case was insufficient.
Magistrate Peter Dixon said samples of the images confirmed the abuse of children in the most extreme way.
He said some depicted crimes in progress.
He sentenced Gowland to 12 months in jail, suspending three months of the sentence.
