John William Goodwin jailed for breaking into homes and filming himself masturbating near sleeping women, children

A predatory ``peeping Tom’’ who terrorised Brisbane’s north side with his sickening voyeurism has been jailed for eight years for breaking into homes and secretly filming himself masturbating next to sleeping women and children.
John Goodwin, 41, has been jailed for eight years.

John William Goodwin, 41, was convicted in the Brisbane District Court yesterday of breaking into 38 homes and secretly filming a total of 64 women and girls while they were asleep, on the toilet and undressing, over seven years until September 17, 2012.
Five women were unable to be identified from Goodwin’s footage.
Some of his victims yesterday bravely sat in the public gallery as Judge Michael Shanahan took into account 598 days served in pre-sentence custody and set parole eligibility for June 1 next year.
``I just want to move forward with my life,’’ one women said outside court.
Another told The Courier-Mail she came to see what Goodwin looked like to satisfy her own curiosity.
``He’s been watching us for years and I still had no idea what he even looked like,’’ she said.
Goodwin’s hidden ``dark side’’ was uncovered when police from Taskforce Argos traced child pornography featuring an eight-year-old girl from Brisbane he secretly filmed to a Russian website, using the web moniker ``Evil I Am’’.
Detectives unearthed a computer cache of 1.5 million files that had been meticulously curated by Goodwin, including 154,000 child exploitation images, 1193 child exploitation videos and countless ``peeping Tom’’ files.
The videos were of women and children, aged 8 to 50, who lived in neighbouring homes up to 2km away from Goodwin, and showed he climbed onto trees, fences, pergolas and gates in order to film through windows as they undressed, went to the toilet and even had sex with their partners.
He also burgled the homes of many of his victims, in one case returning multiple times via an unlocked door to film women and girls from one family, moving from room to room, as they slept.
Goodwin sexually assaulted a number of his victims and filmed himself pulling off their blankets as they slept, touching them with his penis, masturbating and even ejaculating onto the floor.
The court heard he kept ``trophies’’ stolen from the break and enters, including binoculars, laptops and iPhones and had spent time researching the names and identities of his victims.
Crown prosecutor Michael Byrne QC said Goodwin’s offending was predatory and made worse because it was committed while women were in their own homes, many unaware of being filmed.
Barrister Damian Carlton, for Goodwin, tendered a psychological report on his client’s behalf, adding he offended for his own ``voyeuristic sexual gratification’’ that started when he was a small child and was rooted in an internet porn addiction.
Taskforce Argos detective Inspector John Rouse said the sentencing marked the end of a long, protracted and challenging police investigation that opened a ``Pandora’s box’’ of offending.
``I can’t imagine that any member of the public, if they had viewed some of the images and videos that we saw, would not be alarmed about the invasions of privacy that have occurred here, in the sanctity of their own homes,’’ he said.
