Flyer Lifts Lid On Child Sex Offence

A HOBART suburb has been letterboxed with the name and address of a convicted child sex offender living there, in a controversial first for Tasmania.
The community-based organisation Movement Against Kindred Offenders, or MAKO, confirmed yesterday that more than 500 leaflets had been distributed at Claremont over recent days.
They provided the name and address of a resident who committed a child sex offence in the 1990s.
The group has made simitar letter drops for more than 60 convicted child sex offenders interstate, and group co-founder Peter Morell said the latest was Tasmania's first "notification".
He said more were on the way as the group attracted new members in Tasmania.
'The pamphlet is about creating awareness in the community," said Mr Morell, of South Australia.
"It is time to move on and start protecting the children who are potential victims."
But the move, which goes beyond government efforts to create a national child sex offenders register, also raises concerns for civil libertarian groups.
Tasmanian Council of Civil Liberties president Paul Storr said yesterday the group ran the risk of inciting violence and vigilante acts targeting offenders.
"We appreciate that pedophiles have a low 'cure' rate," Mr Storr said.
'That will not be helped If people go and throw rocks through their windows. These people have no chance of rehabilitation if they are chased out of every community."
Mr Storr said the council supported the creation of a national child sex offenders register if the list was handled only by authorities and relevant groups such as schools.
MAKO has gathered the names of 1026 convicted child sex offenders who live across Australia.
"No one approaches the offender whatsoever," Mr Morell said of the notification process, Attorney-General Judy Jackson was overseas yesterday and unavailable for comment.
