Man, 21, charged over sex assault on girl, 8
A 21-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a young girl at a Sunshine amusement centre has been released on bail.
Michael Theo, of Braybrook, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court today following the alleged incident at the
entertainment centre in Ballarat Road, Sunshine, about 6.30pm on Wednesday.
Theo was charged last night with sexual penetration of a child under 12 and committing an indecent act with a child under 16.
The court heard Theo was an employee at the centre where the eight-year-old girl and her family went to play laser
tag about 6pm on Wednesday.Police said the family were fitted with harnesses before entering the amusement area and
Theo, who was not on duty at the time, remained in the vicinity.
No other people were booked in to the attraction at the time.
The court heard that after the first game, the girl had an issue with her equipment and sought the assistance of Theo.
Police told the court that Theo ushered the girl to an isolated area of the venue and helped her with the harness,
before allegedly sexually assaulting her.
He was disturbed by members of the girl’s family, the court heard.
The court heard the laser tag game finished about half an hour later and the family went to McDonald’s for dinner on
their way home.
While at the fast food restaurant, the girl reported the alleged incident to her mother, who contacted police, the court heard.
Police arrested Theo at the centre about 3.20pm yesterday. He was refused bail last night.
The court heard that Theo came to Australia almost three years ago to live with his aunt, who was in court today, and
has limited contact with his family in Indonesia.
Police cited concerns for community safety, but Magistrate Jack Vandersteen released Theo on strict bail conditions.
Mr Vandersteen ordered he surrender his passport immediately, have no unsupervised contact with children under the
age of 18, report to police three times a week, not attend points of international departure or leave Australia, not
contact prosecution witnesses and not go within 200 metres of the centre.
Theo will reappear in the same court for a committal mention on August 10.
