Violent Rapist Ordered to Pay

A violent Rockhampton rapist, who was jailed for 10 years, was yesterday ordered to pay $48,000 compensation to his victim.
The 16-year-old victim had told the court she started using drugs, dropped out of school and became an “angry person” after she was raped.
Michael Shane Kemp, 40, was found guilty by a jury in Rockhampton District Court in March, 2008, of two counts of rape and one of performing an indecent act in public.
The offence occurred on October 22, 2002, when Kemp drove the girl, who he had just met, to an area in North Rockhampton and raped her twice.
She was dragged from the car by her throat, thrown onto the ground and raped.
After the first rape Kemp performed an indecent act in front of the girl and then raped her again.
When he was finished he said to her, “You are lucky – do you know what I could have done to you?”
During sentencing last year, the court was told Kemp also had hepatitis C, which he was well aware of at the time.
Judge Grant Britton yesterday said, in documents presented to the court, the girl had since led a troubled life, which was 80% a direct result of the rapes.
“She started using drugs to block the memories and the pain,” Judge Britton said.
“She dropped out of school and became vulnerable to violent relationships and was, on occasions, beaten badly by partners.”
Judge Britton said as a result of having to relive the event by giving evidence at Kemp’s trial she attempted suicide – and on one occasion needed 54 stiches after cutting herself.
The girl said some people still blame her for Kemp’s incarceration.
Judge Britton ordered the girl receive $60,000 compensation, but it was discounted by 20% as only 80% of the rape can be directly attributed to her mental injuries.
