Accused In Court Before
A quarter of the NSW child pornography offenders charged last
week were people who had previously walked free for similar
crimes.
Over the past four years, NSW
Police charged more than 100
people with child pornography-
related offences. Two were jailed
while the others received fines
and bonds.
A senior NSW police source
said:
"Approximately seven of the
28 people arrested last week had
formerly been charged with child
pornography and sex-related
offences."
Most, he said, could "reasonably expect" to escape jail.
NSW Police are concerned
that the state's child pornography laws lag behind other states.
In Victoria, penalties are much
tougher.
The officer said: "These types
of offences are indictable in other
states but here, possession of
child pornography still only
amounts to a summary offence
with a maximum two-year sentence."
Also in NSW, the Reverend
Fred Nile has warned that a teacher who filmed students changing from behind a mirror might
not have acted alone.
Mr Nile, who had suggested
to the owner that he establish the
small Christian school, said:
"You have to ask how this
teacher was able to install this
equipment."
