Strike Force To Hunt Child Predators
INTERNET sexual predators and online
child pornography will be targeted
by Federal Police and
a parental education campaign as part of a $30.4 million package announced yesterday by Prime Minister John Howard.
With an estimated 20 per cent of children having been approached by a stranger on the Internet,
Mr Howard warned Australia's increased connectivity could open "a pipeline for perversion".
Announcing the measures on Father's Day in north-western Sydney, Mr Howard said the National
Child Protection Initiative would be spearheaded by an Australian Federal Police strike team
investigating, infiltrating and prosecuting pedophile networks and online child sex abuse.
The scheme also involves an education program for parents and teachers about the dangers facing
children online and strategies to help ensure their Internet use is safe.
"There's no greater nightmare for a father or a mother than the prospect that their child might in one
way or another be subject to some kind of abuse," Mr Howard said.
Opposition Leader Mark Latham said he supported any sensible measure to protect children from
pornography as "a pretty basic requirement of parenting in a good strong household". Mr Howard
said a re-elected Coalition government would give the AFP an extra $28.4 million over four years to
set up a national centre to investigate, infiltrate and close online pedophile networks.
Mr Howard said the child protection plan includes the AFP setting up:
A CHILD sex abuse disruption team aimed at smashing pedophile rings and comprising seven
computer forensic specialists, seven investigators and a psychologist.
A 12-PERSON rapid referral team investigating international and national child sex offender
referrals and those from the national register of offenders.
A CRACK targeting and infiltration squad of five intelligence staff and three undercover staff.

29,000 Sex Fiends On MySpace
SOCIAL networking site MySpace.com has found more than 29,000 registered US sex offenders
with profiles on the site, according to North Carolina officials.
The figure is more than four times the number cited by the company two months ago.
North Carolina's Roy Cooper is one of several state attorneys general who recently demanded the News Corp-owned
website provide data on how many registered sex offenders were using the site, along with information about where they live.
After initially withholding the information, citing federal privacy laws, MySpace began sharing the information in May
after the states filed formal legal requests.
At the time, MySpace said it had already used a database it helped create to remove about 7,000 profiles of sex offenders, out
of a total of about 180 million profiles on the site.
Two MySpace spokeswomen did not immediately return calls seeking comment today.
Cooper is pushing for legislation that would require children to receive parental permission before creating social networking
profiles, and require the websites to enact procedures for verifying the parents' identity and age.

Labor Call To Block Internet Porn
More than 20,000 people have signed a petition tabled in the Senate today,
demanding internet pornography be blocked in all households, schools and
public libraries.
In June, the government announced it would offer all households internet
filters for their computers, but the opposition says the plan does not go
far enough.
Labor wants all internet service providers (ISPs) to offer a "clean feed"
internet service to households, schools and public libraries, blocking all
websites identified as containing child pornography, acts of extreme violence
and X-rated material.
"Labor believes that the government should do everything within its power to
protect our kids from exposure to damaging internet content," Stephen Conroy
said today.
Senator Conroy presented the petition to the Senate, containing 20,646
signatures which he said supported Labor's plan.
"The petition that I tabled today clearly shows that this view is widely
shared in the Australian community," he said.
