Dad Jailed for Bashing baby To Death A young Melbourne father who bashed his baby daughter to death has been jailed for a maximum nine years. David Scott Arney, 25, of suburban Heidelberg, sat with his head bowed in the Victorian Supreme Court as Justice Bernard Teague told him his treatment of five-month-old Rachael was "monstrous and abhorrent". Arney pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of baby Rachael Arney and to recklessly causing serious injury by repeatedly punching her, in the weeks prior to her death on December 15 last year. Father Admits Killing Baby In 'Fit Of Passion' A YOUNG father has admitted to killing his baby daughter after last year telling police he punched her in fits of passion. Quoting from the film Con Air, David Scott Arney said in a recorded police interview that most killings resulted from passion. "I feel that I am a passionate man and sometimes I do get frustrated, as my wife has seen," he said on December 15, the day his five-month-old daughter, Rachael, died. Church member Arney, 24, said he had punched Rachael in the stomach about 10 times. "I used to do acting, and silent screams was a good way to relieve tension … Another way to relieve tension is to … punch something," he said. Arney said he was not relieving tension every time he hit Rachael, and he had never hit his wife, 20-year-old Laurita Arney. When police asked what Rachael had done to cause him to punch her, Arney replied: "She probably doesn't do anything." Arney, of West Heidelberg, wept in the Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday after pleading guilty to Rachael's manslaughter. He also pleaded guilty to recklessly causing her serious injury between September 1 and December 14. According to documents before magistrate Maurice Gurvich, Rachael died from peritonitis caused by a ruptured bowel and had other injuries said to be indicative of battered baby syndrome. Father Charged With Baby's Murder A 24-year-old man has appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court charged with the murder of his baby daughter. David Scott Arney did not enter a plea to the murder of his five-month-old daughter Rachel Joy Arney on Wednesday. The baby was admitted to the Austin Hospital yesterday and died shortly afterwards. An autopsy revealed she suffered internal injuries. Arney has been remanded in custody and will reappear in court in April. AAP (16-12-2005) |
